This video describes Non Rapid Eye Movement (REM) Sleep Arousal Disorder. This disorder can be divided into two subtypes: sleepwalking and sleep terrors. The sleepwalking subtype is an episode of incomplete arousal usually occurring in the first 1/3 of the night. This episode is characterized by walking around and engaging in simple, routine behavior. Typically, an individual is difficult to wake up during an episode. The sleepwalking episodes are not associated with dreaming and amnesia is observed afterward. The sleepwalking subtype has two specifiers: sleep-related eating behavior and sleep-related sexual behavior (sexsomnia). Sleep related eating is more common in females. Sleep related sexual behavior is more common in males. The sleep terror subtype usually starts with a scream or cry from the perspective from an observer. Sleep terror subtype episodes are also referred to as night terrors.

Kaur et al. identify calcitonin gene-related peptide neurons in the parabrachial nucleus as a key switch for waking up the brain in response to elevated CO2. This switch provides a target for preventing sleep disruptions in obstructive sleep apnea. Video Rating: / 5

What makes a great leader? Management theorist Simon Sinek suggests, it’s someone who makes their employees feel secure, who draws staffers into a circle of trust. But creating trust and safety β especially in an uneven economy β means taking on big responsibility.

Martin Hagger is Professor of Psychology at Curtin University. His areas of expertise are social, health, sport and exercise psychology. He is involved in numerous research projects nationally and internationally with a focus on motivation and behaviour change. At the highest level, athletes are well-matched in terms of their physical abilities, conditioning, and skill level. But often that is not enough to win and perform on the biggest of stages like the Olympic games. Developing strategies and techniques to get athletes minds in the best possible condition for optimal performance is increasingly important for sports teams and coaches.
Martin will provide an overview of the kinds of techniques that elite athletes use to prepare psychologically for their sport, give details of the scientific research into these techniques and how they work, and how the techniques might be used by competitive athetes and coaches to maximise performance.

About TEDx, x = independently organised event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organised events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organised events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organised TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organised.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations) Video Rating: / 5

These apps are an ESSENTIAL for any healthcare professional.
Over the last couple of years as a doctor, I’ve noticed a move towards incorporating technology in the way that we practice. This is even more relevant today with the current Global climate where we are now using e-prescribing, remote consultation and even e-appointments.
I have found the following applications invaluable as a medical student, trainee doctor through to my current practice as a GP.
These apps have made my work more efficient and lightened my pockets of the heavy medical books I would have had to carry to replace them.
